The region is known for its productive, fertile fields and cereal growing, and the predominant farm types in the East Midlands are arable farms, which accounted for 69% of the farmed area in the region in 2022.
Production
A lot of sugar beet is grown here. Some of this goes to supply British Sugar, based in Newark-on-Trent, which is partnered with 3,000 growers to produce home grown sugar.
General cropping covers almost 20% of the region’s farmed area, while 22% of the farmed area was put to permanent pasture.
People
In the East Midlands the average farm size in 2022 was 102 hectares, which is larger than the English average of 87 hectares.
The region employs around 33,268 farm workers.
